What Is Emotional Intelligence?
Who would have thought that The Bachelor would be the catalyst to having a discussion about Emotional Intelligence? But Corrine, the sassy, sexy, provocative 24-year-old business owner of her Dad’s company, who has a nanny, (that’s me not showing EQ, but being caddy), was quite insulted when she was told that she lacked emotional intelligence. She thought she was being bullied about how smart she is or isn’t. And, well; the answer is yes to both claims. Even Ellen DeGeneres who interviewed Corrine yesterday on her show said she didn’t know what it was either. (I think she was being nice to make Corrine feel better) So I have gathered a simple explanation for what Emotional Intelligence also known as EQ is and if any of you know Corrine from the Bachelor, perhaps share this post with her.
Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. It is generally said to include three skills:
- Emotional awareness, including the ability to identify your own emotions and those of others;
- The ability to harness emotions and apply them to tasks like thinking and problems solving;
- The ability to manage emotions, including the ability to regulate your own emotions, and the ability to cheer up or calm down another person.
“There is within the human heart a quality of intelligence which has been known to surpass that attributed to the human mind.” Aberjhani @lindaedgecombe
IQ and EQ are both required in creating a successful life and EQ is an area we can actually improve on. It takes practice but well worth the effort.
